Premium discounts should be available for your homeowner policy.
If you have certain building features or make certain improvements that will strengthen your home against the destructive power of hurricane force winds, you could save on your windstorm insurance policy premium. In fact, these home improvements may already exist on your home! If your home is concrete block construction and was built in 1962 or later, you should have tie down clips from the rafters to the walls. This one feature will save you hundreds of dollars on your annual insurance premium. Below is an example of a home that doesn't have the tie down clips, doesn't have a 2001 compliant roof covering or any window protection that qualifies for insurance discounts. However it still qualifies for premium discounts of 24% at over half of the 147 insurance companies in the state. The fact that it is a 'Hip Style' roof helps.
You can check for yourself how your house might do by going to the following link. If your home is concrete block construction and was built in 1962 or after, be sure to give yourself credit for the rafter to wall clips.
If these housing features and mitigation devices are present in your home or in your condominium unit, contact your agent to see if you qualify for a premium discount. Mobile homes are not eligible for these discounts. The discounts are not available to some homeowner and dwelling fire polices when Windstorm Exclusion forms are shown in the Declarations. If you have a question concerning this matter, or to verify if you are currently receiving discounts contact your agent. In order to qualify for many of these premium discounts, your building features and home improvements need be verified. |
